Residential Residential lightning protection consists of protecting the home with a lightning rod system and protecting the electronics equipment with surge suppressors. Installation of a surge suppressor on the main panel gives the first level of protection. To get the second level of protection you need to install a plug strip (model TLP (100) on each device. The telephone ground and the electric ground must be bonded together along with the cable ground. The Lightning Protection Institute recommends a Master Label lightning rod system be installed with lightning rods every 20 feet and at least two ground rods and usually more are required. We sell a dissipation array unit that is a spline ball with about 80 points that a home owner can install with 1 ground rod. This is designed to discharge the residence and change the path of the lightning away. If the lightning did hit the array it would conduct the lightning to ground outside the residence.
